Oh, I can assure you, this DID in fact happen. A friend of my mom was bumped at the last minute before the plane took off.

the pilot didnt ... ( 1 week ago by Wh0rse)
the pilot didnt know that the engine had altogether fallen off the plane, nor did he know that the slats on the left wing had retracted (since the hydraulic fluid all bled out). The left wing thus stalled while the right wing was still getting lift, so the plane rolled into a dive. He couldve possibly saved the plane if he immediately had sped it up by bringing the nose down, but there was no time to think and he had no idea of the seriousness of the problems with the left wing

They don't steer it ... ( 6 days ago by Bahfu)
They don't steer it to the left. It is because the engine seperated. Procedures told them to reduce speed to 15x knots (x is unknown number..) I think it was 156 knots. Because the wing was damaged due to the seperation, they had no lift at this speed for the left wing. Right wing gives lift, tilting it to the left. At 300 feet there is no room to maneouvre and that results in a crash.
No it is after V1. ... ( 6 days ago by Bahfu)
No it is after V1. That means what ever may happen it is better to take off. Your speed is too high and the runway is too short to stop. Going airborne is then the only option. This crash wouldn't have happened if the pilots knew the engine was seperated and they shouldn't reduce their speed as instructed in the emergency procedures manual.

the REAL truth ... ( 5 days ago by fly4val)
the REAL truth behind this crash is AA's failure to follow DAC approved maintenance procedures in removing the engine first then the pylon. They tried to beat the book by saving 4-6 hours and failed the bolts holding the tombstone (aft) fitting. When the bolts went, the engine rotated forward over the left wing which closed the leading edge devices. Douglas got the bad rap without cause; it was totally AA maintenance that caused this deadly crash.

Ofcourse it is due ... ( 2 days ago by Bahfu)
Ofcourse it is due to bad maintenance, but still they could have landed if they knew about it and they did not follow the procedure to slow down. I do NOT blame the pilots. They did their job as they should, it's just 'if'. Would be better though if they landed. Pilots who did this in a simulator and did not know end up in a same situation, with rolling to the left and crash, pilots who knew (after being told) increased their speed to compensate the damage landed safely in the simulator.limit!
